Sweet summer

Warm breezes, the smell of salt water, sipping on some sweet treats – sounds like summer is in full swing! Phil had last week off so we took advantage of his free time and the glorious Southern California weather and went on some baby friendly adventures — no extreme hiking in Sophia’s future quite yet. One day we headed to San Ysidro (the town just north of the Tijuana, Mexico border) to do some shopping. The shopping was ok, but the amazing $1 fish tacos from the Fish Mart made it worth the trip!

Later in the week we headed the opposite direction to spend a day in Orange County. We started our day with some delicious cinnamon rolls from Cinnamon Roll Fair on Balboa Island in Newport Beach. Afterward we strolled the boardwalk and looked at the quaint homes throughout the island. From Newport Beach we drove south on the Coast Highway passing through Laguna Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente on our way home. Even though the OC is a short 30 minutes away we never spend anytime there so it was a nice change of scenery.

We spent the rest of our week in and around Oceanside. On Saturday I was craving a good old fashioned banana split. Who would have thought that would be such a hard thing to find?! In the land of frozen yogurt (which don’t get me wrong is also super delicious) it’s hard to find a traditional ice cream shop around here. We ended up at the 101 Cafe in Oceanside, thinking the 1950s style diner would surely fit the bill. In the end they didn’t have this classic on the menu but their butterscotch malts and root beer floats did not disappoint!

In between our little adventures we also enjoyed a lot of time around the house playing with Sophia. She’s getting so big already – over 11lbs and she has grown 5 inches. She is starting to smile and react to things around her; it’s fun to sit back and watch her take it all in. We’re exploring “tummy time,” working on holding our head up, and sitting in our bumbo. Sophia also started to consistantly sleep 7 hours at a stretch and mom and dad are very appreciative of this!

I would be remiss to end this post without mentioning our first little lady – Lucy. She’s still here and also enjoying spending time with Sophia. Stay tuned for more summer fun!
