Pop-up opportunities to head west don’t happen all that often in SoCal so when the opportunity arises, you take it. The only way west is by boat so I showed up at the dock around 8pm and we pushed off about an hour later. After a stop at the bait barge, we settle into a 10 kt troll west for the next 10 hours.
West we went! When the sun came up, the view hadn’t changed much but we were about 100 miles off the coast. We would eventually arrive at Tanner Bank to try our luck against the blue fin. 13 on the boat and we came back with 9 blue fin but I was one of the empty handed ones. Before heading back we were treated to quite the sunset. The dark skies soon lit up again with lightning as we chugged our way back east through a big storm. Torrential rain, decent seas, and a couple of beers in the galley filled the evening. An awesome time despite the empty cooler at the dock. Hey, if I really needed a guaranteed fish I would have just made a trip to the grocery store.
