Eager to get in the habit of carving out time for exploring, we piled in the truck and headed east to The Slot (not to be confused with Slot Canyon). Much to the delight of the driver, you need to cruise in a few miles off the pavement just to get to the trailhead and there are plenty of other OHV trails in the area to explore.
We opted to enter the canyon from the west side and started the walk around the rim of the canyon, descended to the floor, then east through The Slot. Certainly a cool like hike that is worth the drive on a not-too-hot day. Rumor has it the drive home takes you right through Julian pie country… strange how stuff like that just happen to line up.
